    Makino: The Ultimate Ultralink

Makino is a major antagonist in the Max Steel franchise. He is an alien cybernetic being and the leader of the Ultralinks. Makino’s goal is to devour Earth and convert it into his second home planet. To do this, he must first destroy mankind and Max Steel.

    History and Background

Unlike most villains, Makino wasn’t born; he was created. Eons ago, a mad scientist with a dangerous curiosity about floating technology conducted an experiment that resulted in Makino’s creation. This techno-organic being was imbued with the power to absorb and expand, a power that quickly proved too much for his creator to control. The scientist’s assistant warned him about Makino’s destructive potential, but the scientist, blinded by his hubris, believed Makino to be indestructible and under his control. This proved to be a fatal mistake, as Makino swiftly took control of the scientist’s body and absorbed his assistant, beginning his reign of terror1.

Makino, now a force of destruction, set his sights on the universe, absorbing planets and expanding his power with each conquest. Among the many worlds he consumed was Takion, the homeworld of a powerful being named Jim McGrath. Jim, along with other survivors, escaped to Earth, only to find that Makino had followed them, seeking to claim Earth as his next victim1.

Sixteen years before the start of the 2013 Max Steel animated series, Makino launched his first invasion of Earth. He was met with resistance from a turbo-powered warrior and his alien partner, who valiantly defended Earth and pushed back Makino’s forces. However, Makino managed to capture the warrior and imprison him for 16 long years. With the warrior out of the picture, Earth enjoyed a period of respite from Makino’s threat2.

But Makino’s hunger for conquest could not be contained. He eventually returned to Earth, more powerful than ever. What he didn’t anticipate was that the warrior he had imprisoned had a son, Maxwell McGrath, who would inherit his father’s legacy. Maxwell, bonding with his father’s alien partner, Steel, became the new Max Steel, a formidable force that stood in Makino’s way. Max and Steel’s combined power not only saved the world but also freed Max’s father from his long imprisonment2.

Even in defeat, Makino proved to be incredibly resilient. His core processing unit survived, allowing him to regenerate by Ultralinking with a new host2. In Max Steel: The Wrath of Makino, he orchestrated a competition to find the next commander of the Ultralinks, with the prize being the ability to enter Makino’s mind. Max, ever the hero, won the competition, but this victory turned out to be a trap. Makino used this opportunity to link with Max, attempting to use his Turbo energy to destroy Earth3.

In a desperate attempt to save Max and the world, Jim McGrath and Steel joined forces once again. They confronted Makino, who had now taken on a terrifying new form, Turbo Annihilation Mode. This mode, a gigantic transformation fueled by Max’s Turbo energy, granted Makino immense destructive power. He began to wreak havoc on Copper Canyon, drilling into the Earth with the intent of reaching its core and causing the planet to tear itself apart4.

Jim and Steel, realizing the gravity of the situation, devised a plan to break Makino’s hold on Max. Steel, with his strong bond with Max, was able to reach out to him and sever the Ultralink with Makino. This allowed Max to regain control and ultimately defeat Makino5.

Despite suffering another defeat, Makino’s core processing unit remained intact. In his final moments, he transmitted a message to his remaining Ultralinks, challenging them to find the source of his power and claim it as their own, promising that one of them would become his heir2.

Interestingly, there’s a connection between the Max Steel franchise and the classic Big Jim toy line. It’s revealed that Max Steel is the son of Big Jim, and another character, Jefferson Smith, is actually Big Jeff from the Big Jim series, 20 years older. This unexpected link adds a layer of nostalgia for fans of both franchises6.

Mattel Max Steel Reboot Makino Action Figure

Mattel, the company behind the Max Steel franchise, has a long history of producing action figures based on the series. The original toy line, launched in 1999, featured various versions of Max Steel and a limited number of villains. These figures were similar in style to the classic 12-inch G.I. Joe toys6. Over the years, the toy line evolved, introducing new characters and vehicles, including the fearsome Elementors and a variety of Turbo Modes for Max Steel6.

In 2013, Mattel rebooted the Max Steel toy line to coincide with the new animated series. This reboot saw a shift in design and quality, with figures generally smaller and with fewer points of articulation. However, the reboot line also introduced a wider range of characters, including Makino6.

The Mattel Max Steel Reboot Makino Action Figure stands out as one of the most impressive figures in the line. This 12-inch tall figure boasts a “magnificently scary sculpt” that faithfully captures Makino’s intimidating presence3. It is fully articulated, allowing for a variety of poses, and features Makino’s unique ability to absorb metal objects and integrate them into his body as weapons. In this particular figure, Makino has absorbed a jet, which is integrated onto his back, giving him the ability to fly and attack3.

    Different Variations and Their Features

While the research material doesn’t provide information about different variations of the Makino action figure, it does mention that the figure comes in two sizes: 6 inches and 12 inches7. It’s possible that these different sizes represent different variations of the figure, with the 12-inch version being the more detailed and articulated one.

    Detailed Descriptions and Images

The Mattel Max Steel Reboot Makino Action Figure is a highly detailed and articulated figure that captures the character’s menacing appearance. It is made of alloy steel and metal and comes in a multicolor scheme. The action figure is recommended for children ages 4 and up7.

    Sales Figures and Popularity

Unfortunately, the research material doesn’t provide any specific information about the sales figures and popularity of the Mattel Max Steel Reboot Makino Action Figure. However, considering the popularity of the Max Steel franchise and the impressive design of the figure, it’s likely that it was a sought-after item among collectors and fans.

Where to Buy the Action Figure

The Mattel Max Steel Reboot Makino Action Figure can be purchased online from various retailers, including Amazon and eBay7. It may also be available from other online toy stores and possibly from some physical toy retailers.

In addition to action figures, Mattel also released “Max Gear” as part of the Max Steel toy line. This gear included items like a retractable Ninja Sword, Max’s communicator, and Max’s suit with battle sounds and light, allowing kids to immerse themselves in the world of Max Steel6.

It’s worth noting that the Max Steel toy line has featured other notable villains besides Makino. Psycho, one of the earliest antagonists in the franchise, appeared in various forms throughout the original toy line. Another villain, Vitriol, was introduced in the Urban Siege subline and shared some similarities with Psycho in terms of design6.

Appearances in Movies, TV Shows, and Video Games

Makino has made several appearances in the Max Steel franchise, primarily in the 2013 animated series and the 2015 animated film Max Steel: The Wrath of Makino. He is also a key figure in the overall narrative of the franchise, as his actions and history are intertwined with the origins of Max Steel and the formation of N-Tek.

Here’s a table summarizing Makino’s appearances in movies and TV shows:

While Makino hasn’t been featured in any standalone video games, he does appear as an antagonist in a Max Steel strategy game. In this game, players can engage in strategic battles against Makino and his forces, utilizing various Turbo Modes and characters from the series9.

Future of the Makino Character and the Max Steel Franchise

The future of the Makino character and the Max Steel franchise remains uncertain. While Mattel hasn’t officially announced any new projects, there’s always potential for a revival. The franchise has a dedicated fan base, and Makino, with his complex history and formidable powers, could easily be reintroduced as a major antagonist in future installments.

One possibility is that Makino could return in a new animated series or film, perhaps exploring the aftermath of his message to the Ultralinks and the rise of a new heir. He could also be featured in a new video game, potentially a more action-oriented one that allows players to experience the thrill of battling Makino and his forces firsthand.

It’s worth noting that the production of a new live-action Max Steel film adaptation was suspended in 201310. While this doesn’t necessarily mean the end of live-action adaptations for the franchise, it does suggest that Mattel might be focusing on other avenues for the time being.

    Conclusion

Makino is a compelling and formidable villain who has left a lasting impact on the Max Steel franchise. His relentless pursuit of power and his ability to cheat death make him a constant threat to Earth and a formidable opponent for Max Steel. The Mattel Max Steel Reboot Makino Action Figure is a testament to the character’s popularity and enduring appeal.

While the future of the Max Steel franchise remains uncertain, Makino’s story is far from over. His legacy of destruction and his challenge to the Ultralinks leave the door open for his return in future installments, ensuring that the battle between Max Steel and the Ultimate Ultralink will continue for years to come.

Ratchet & Clank: A Dynamic Duo and Their Collectible Counterparts

Ratchet & Clank, the Lombax mechanic and his robot companion, have been captivating gamers since their PlayStation 2 debut in 2002. Their adventures, filled with over-the-top weaponry, vibrant worlds, and engaging storylines, have made them PlayStation icons. This blog post delves into the history of this dynamic duo, exploring their origins, evolution, and the captivating world they inhabit. We’ll also examine the DC Direct Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time Armored Ratchet Action Figure and other collectibles that bring these beloved characters to life.

A Galactic Journey: The History of Ratchet & Clank

In the early 2000s, Insomniac Games, known for the Spyro the Dragon series, sought to create a new intellectual property for the PlayStation 2. Inspired by classic sci-fi and buddy cop films, they envisioned a space-faring adventure featuring an alien hero and his robotic sidekick1.

The first Ratchet & Clank introduced players to Ratchet, a Lombax mechanic with dreams of exploring the galaxy, and Clank, a small but intelligent robot who crash-landed on Ratchet’s home planet. Together, they set out to stop Chairman Drek, who planned to destroy planets to create a new home for his people1.

The game was a hit, selling millions of copies and receiving praise for its innovative gameplay, vibrant graphics, and humorous writing4. It established a formula that continues to define the series: a vast array of gadgets and weapons, diverse locations, and a compelling narrative. This success laid the foundation for a franchise that would span multiple consoles and generations5.

Interestingly, Ratchet’s character underwent a significant evolution early in the series. Initially portrayed as somewhat of a “jerk,” the writers, with the help of new voice actor James Arnold Taylor, softened his personality to make him more relatable3. This change contributed to the enduring appeal of the Lombax hero.

Over the years, Ratchet & Clank have faced numerous threats, from the robotic Dr. Nefarious to the tyrannical Emperor Tachyon. Their adventures have taken them across the Solana Galaxy and beyond, encountering a colorful cast of characters along the way3. The series has also expanded beyond games, with a comic book series that introduced new villains and storylines7.

The series has evolved with each installment, introducing new gameplay mechanics, expanding the lore, and refining the signature blend of action, platforming, and humor. Insomniac has consistently faced the challenge of balancing innovation with staying true to the core “DNA” of the series3. Ratchet: Deadlocked, for example, shifted the focus heavily towards combat, which, while enjoyable, deviated from the series’ platforming roots. Later entries experimented with co-op gameplay and tower defense elements, showcasing Insomniac’s willingness to explore new ideas within the Ratchet & Clank framework.

Alongside Insomniac’s main series development, High Impact Games, a studio founded by former Insomniac members, developed two spin-off titles for the PlayStation Portable: Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank3. These games brought the Ratchet & Clank experience to the handheld console, further expanding the reach of the franchise.

In 2016, a movie adaptation of the first game was released, reimagining the origin story with some key differences3. This coincided with a reimagining of the original game for the PlayStation 4, incorporating elements from the film’s screenplay.

Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time

Released in 2009, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time was a pivotal entry in the series. It continued the story from Tools of Destruction and Quest for Booty, with Ratchet searching for Clank, who had been kidnapped by Dr. Nefarious8. This game was intended to be the culmination of the “Future” saga, incorporating all the elements that players loved about Ratchet & Clank3.

The game received critical acclaim for its engaging story, innovative gameplay mechanics, and stunning visuals9. It introduced time-bending puzzles, where Clank could record and replay his actions to solve challenges4. It also featured space exploration, allowing players to freely travel between planets and discover hidden areas4. These additions, along with the deeper character development, further solidified Ratchet & Clank‘s status as PlayStation icons.

    Plot Summary

A Crack in Time begins with Clank held captive by Dr. Nefarious, who aims to manipulate time itself. Meanwhile, Ratchet continues his search for Clank, joined by Captain Qwark10.

Clank discovers his connection to the Zoni, mysterious beings who control time, and learns about his destiny as the caretaker of the Great Clock. Ratchet, with the help of a Lombax named Alister Azimuth, uncovers the truth about the Lombaxes’ disappearance and faces a difficult choice between saving his friend and rewriting history9.

The “Future” saga, including A Crack in Time, played a crucial role in expanding the Ratchet & Clank narrative. It delved into the Lombax backstory, revealing their advanced technology and their conflict with the Cragmites6. It also explored Clank’s origins, establishing his connection to the Zoni and his unique role in maintaining the balance of time3.

The game culminates in a showdown with Dr. Nefarious, where Ratchet and Clank must prevent him from altering time and save the universe8.

    Friends and Foes

Throughout their adventures, Ratchet and Clank have forged alliances and faced formidable adversaries. These relationships add depth and complexity to the Ratchet & Clank universe.

    Allies:

    • Captain Qwark: The self-proclaimed superhero of the Solana Galaxy, Captain Qwark is a cowardly and egotistical character who often causes more trouble than he solves. Despite his flaws, he has occasionally aided Ratchet and Clank in their missions2.
    • Angela Cross: A Lombax scientist who first appeared in Going Commando, Angela Cross initially worked for Megacorp before joining forces with Ratchet and Clank to stop a dangerous experiment11.
    • The Plumber: A mysterious recurring character who appears in various locations throughout the series, offering cryptic advice and fixing things. His true identity and purpose remain unknown12.

    Enemies:

    • Dr. Nefarious: A robotic madman who despises organic life, Dr. Nefarious is Ratchet and Clank’s arch-nemesis. He has repeatedly attempted to conquer or destroy the galaxy, using his scientific genius and robotic creations3.
    • Emperor Tachyon: The last of the Cragmites, Emperor Tachyon sought revenge on the Lombaxes for the demise of his race. He was a formidable adversary in Tools of Destruction, with his advanced technology and ruthless ambition6.

The Sounds of the Galaxy: Music in Ratchet & Clank

The Ratchet & Clank games are known not only for their visuals and gameplay but also for their memorable soundtracks. Composers like David Bergeaud (who scored the original trilogy) and Boris Salchow (who composed for the “Future” saga) have created music that perfectly complements the games’ blend of action, humor, and sci-fi adventure9. The soundtracks feature a mix of orchestral scores, electronic music, and quirky themes that capture the unique personality of each planet and character.

Collectible Companions: Bringing Ratchet & Clank to Life

The popularity of Ratchet & Clank has led to a variety of merchandise, including action figures, statues, and plushies. These collectibles allow fans to bring their favorite characters home and celebrate the vibrant world of the games.

The game also features the “Insomniac Museum,” a fun Easter egg that showcases the history of the studio’s games, including Ratchet & Clank, Spyro the Dragon, and Resistance4.

The Future of Ratchet & Clank

Insomniac Games continues to support the Ratchet & Clank franchise. While specific future projects remain under wraps, they have expressed their commitment to the series, suggesting that more interdimensional adventures await Ratchet and Clank5. The popularity of Ratchet & Clank has extended beyond the games themselves, with a variety of merchandise allowing fans to further immerse themselves in the universe. Action figures, like the DC Direct Armored Ratchet, provide a tangible connection to the characters and their iconic designs. The film explores Black Adam’s origin story and his emergence in the modern world, where he clashes with the Justice Society of America. While some reports suggest the film was a box office disappointment, others indicate it may have ultimately turned a profit1. The film grossed $393 million worldwide 2 and was the 15th biggest blockbuster of 20223. One IMDb user praised the film’s costume and character designs, stating that it “is better than WonderWoman 1984,” but criticized the dialogue and humor4. Another user found the movie “badly disjointed” and “a bad imitation of better Marvel movies.” 4

    TV Shows

    • Young Justice: Black Adam has appeared in this animated series, where he is depicted as a member of the Injustice League.
    • Justice League Unlimited: He also appeared in this animated series, where he fought against the Justice League.

    Video Games

    • Injustice: Gods Among Us: Black Adam is a playable character in this popular fighting game.
    • Injustice 2: He returns as a playable character in the sequel.
    • DC Universe Online: Black Adam is a character in this online role-playing game.

    Character History

Black Adam, whose real name is Teth-Adam, first appeared in DC Comics in 1945. Originally depicted as an ancient Egyptian villain, Black Adam’s origin story has been reimagined and expanded over the years. In his most common origin, Teth-Adam was a slave in ancient Kahndaq who was chosen by the wizard Shazam to be his champion. However, unlike Shazam’s later champion, Billy Batson, Teth-Adam was corrupted by power and became a ruthless tyrant. He was eventually defeated and imprisoned by Shazam, only to reemerge centuries later to challenge the modern-day Shazam and the DC Universe.

Black Adam’s awesome abilities are similar to those of Shazam, granted by the ancient Egyptian gods. By uttering the magic word “Shazam,” he gains superhuman strength, speed, stamina, flight, and the ability to control lightning. However, unlike Shazam, Black Adam draws his powers from a different set of gods:

    PowerGodDescription
StaminaShuGrants incredible endurance and the ability to withstand extreme conditions.
SwiftnessHeruBestows incredible speed, allowing Black Adam to move and fly at supersonic speeds.
StrengthAmonProvides immense strength, enabling Black Adam to lift mountains and overpower even the strongest opponents.
WisdomZehutiGrants Black Adam vast knowledge and understanding, allowing him to strategize and make wise decisions in battle.
PowerAtonEnhances Black Adam’s other powers and grants him control over magical lightning.
CourageMehenGives Black Adam unwavering courage and the will to fight for what he believes in, even against overwhelming odds.

This unique combination of powers makes Black Adam a formidable opponent, capable of going toe-to-toe with some of the strongest heroes in the DC Universe.

Over the years, Black Adam has evolved from a straightforward villain to a more complex anti-hero. He is driven by a desire to protect his homeland, Kahndaq, and often clashes with other heroes due to his brutal methods and disregard for authority. This moral ambiguity makes him a fascinating character, and his struggle between good and evil is a recurring theme in his stories. Black Adam’s anti-hero status is particularly significant in the context of contemporary superhero narratives that often explore moral ambiguity and complex characters5. He represents a departure from the traditional black-and-white morality of earlier superhero stories, offering a more nuanced and relatable portrayal of a character grappling with power and responsibility.

    Relationships

Black Adam’s relationships with other DC Comics characters are complex and often fraught with conflict.

    Friends and Allies

    • Adrianna Tomaz: In recent comics, Adrianna Tomaz has become a key ally and love interest for Black Adam. She is an archaeologist and freedom fighter from Kahndaq who helps Black Adam understand the modern world and navigate his role as a protector.
    • Justice Society of America: While initially clashing with the Justice Society, Black Adam has occasionally allied with them against common threats, such as in the “Black Adam: The Dark Age” comic book storyline.

Bandai Mechagodzilla 12 Inch Action Figure

    A little bit of context

Mechagodzilla: The Ultimate Mechanical Menace and its Bandai 12-Inch Action Figure

Godzilla has faced many formidable foes in his reign as the King of the Monsters, but few are as iconic and enduring as his mechanical doppelganger, Mechagodzilla. This robotic titan has become one of Godzilla’s most popular and recurring adversaries, alongside King Ghidorah, captivating audiences with its impressive array of weaponry and relentless pursuit of Godzilla since its debut in 1974. This blog post will delve into the history of Mechagodzilla, exploring its various incarnations, appearances in movies, TV shows, and video games, and its enduring rivalry with Godzilla. We’ll also look closer at the Bandai Mechagodzilla 12-inch action figure, a must-have collectible for any fan of this mechanical menace.

    The History of Mechagodzilla

Mechagodzilla’s origins have evolved throughout the Godzilla franchise, shifting from an alien invader to a human-built weapon. Let’s explore the different incarnations of this mechanical titan:

    Showa Era Mechagodzilla

Mechagodzilla first stomped onto the scene in the 1974 film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Initially disguised as Godzilla, this extraterrestrial menace was created by the Simians, an alien race seeking to conquer Earth. This first incarnation was built from “space titanium,” an incredibly durable material that allowed it to withstand Godzilla’s attacks. Its arsenal included missiles, lasers, a force field, and the devastating Space Beam, a rainbow-colored optical laser capable of destroying objects instantaneously. Interestingly, the idea for a mechanical Godzilla predates this film by a few years, with a character called “Mechani-Godzilla” appearing in a 1971-1972 television show. It’s also worth noting that the original draft for Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla featured a different alien monster named Garugan.

The Showa Mechagodzilla returned in the 1975 film Terror of Mechagodzilla. Rebuilt and upgraded, this version was now equipped with a Laser Firing Apparatus and even more powerful Space Beams. The original concept for this film involved two dinosaurs called the Titans merging to become Titanosaurus, showcasing the evolution of ideas within the franchise.

    Heisei Era Mechagodzilla

In 1993’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Mechagodzilla was reimagined as a human creation. Built by the United Nations Godzilla Countermeasures Center (UNGCC), this version utilized technology salvaged from the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah. Constructed from synthetic diamonds and powered by a nuclear reactor, this Mechagodzilla could fire energy blasts and absorb Godzilla’s atomic breath to charge its plasma grenade. This film was promoted through the children’s program “Adventure Godzilla-land,” composer Akira Ifukube created a unique theme for Mechagodzilla, incorporating a battle march with heavy percussion.

    Millennium Era Mechagodzilla (Kiryu)

The Millennium era introduced Kiryu in 2002’s Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. This Mechagodzilla was a cyborg built around the skeleton of the original Godzilla from 1954. This unique connection to Godzilla gave Kiryu a distinct identity and added a layer of complexity to its character. Controlled by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), Kiryu was equipped with an Absolute Zero cannon, later replaced by the Triple Hyper Maser Cannon. However, Kiryu was susceptible to being possessed by the original Godzilla’s spirit, leading to unpredictable behavior.

    Anime Trilogy Mechagodzilla

The anime trilogy introduced a unique take on Mechagodzilla. Constructed by human and Bilusaludo scientists, this version was designed to combat Godzilla Earth. Standing at 50 meters tall and weighing 30,000 metric tons, it was the smallest and lightest incarnation of Mechagodzilla. However, it was ultimately destroyed before it could be fully activated. Its remains, however, evolved into a massive structure known as Mechagodzilla City.

    MonsterVerse Mechagodzilla

The MonsterVerse’s Mechagodzilla, appearing in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, was created by Apex Cybernetics with the goal of replacing Godzilla as the apex predator. This version was controlled by Ren Serizawa via a neural connection with King Ghidorah’s skull. Interestingly, the design for this Mechagodzilla was inspired by classic Transformers and the Terminator T-800. It also possessed the unique ability to swim, adding another dimension to its threat. Notably, this Mechagodzilla ran on the “Kuronuma Psionic v1.3” operating system, a reference to the Black Hole Planet 3 Alien leader from the original Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla film.

Toho: The Company Behind the Monster

Before we delve further into Mechagodzilla’s appearances, it’s important to acknowledge the company behind this iconic monster. The rights to Mechagodzilla, like Godzilla, are owned by Toho Co., Ltd., a Japanese film, theater production, and distribution company. Toho has been responsible for producing most of the Godzilla films and has played a crucial role in shaping the franchise’s enduring legacy.

Mechagodzilla in Movies, TV Shows, and Video Games

Mechagodzilla has become a recurring character in the Godzilla franchise, appearing in numerous films, TV shows, video games, and even comic books. Here’s a table summarizing some of its most notable appearances:

    Export to Sheets

In Godzilla Island, Mechagodzilla was a member of G-Guard, a human military organization that protected Godzilla Island. In the Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong comic series, Mechagodzilla was equipped with a Titan-attracting beacon.

    Friends and Foes

Mechagodzilla’s primary foe is, of course, Godzilla himself. Their battles are legendary clashes of titans, showcasing the raw power of nature against the might of human technology. However, Mechagodzilla has also faced other kaiju, including Anguirus and King Caesar. In some instances, Mechagodzilla has even been an ally to Godzilla, such as in Godzilla Island, where it helped defend against the invading Zillions.

The Bandai Mechagodzilla 12-Inch Action Figure

The Future of Mechagodzilla and Toho

Mechagodzilla’s future in the Godzilla franchise seems assured. The character’s popularity and enduring appeal make it a likely candidate for future films, TV shows, and video games. There are even hints that Mechagodzilla may return in a future MonsterVerse film, potentially rebuilt by Monarch.

Toho, the company behind Godzilla and Mechagodzilla, is also looking to the future. The company has announced “The TOHO VISION 2032 TOHO Group Management Corporate Strategy,” which aims to expand its business globally with animation as its fourth pillar. This strategy includes initiatives to create and develop intellectual property (IP), utilize digital technologies, and develop overseas markets. Toho is also investing in their Los Angeles-based subsidiary, Toho International Inc., and has acquired and renamed the animation studio TIA to Toho Animation Studios. Recently, Toho acquired a stake in the US-based production and distribution company Fifth Season.

Toho is also committed to sustainability, with plans to incorporate solar power and make the studio more environmentally friendly. The company is also investing in new technologies, including immersive sound for large-format productions and virtual production LED walls. Toho is working with the Japanese government to create a “one-stop shop” to support international productions, aiming to streamline the process for filmmakers.

    Themes and Symbolism

Throughout its various incarnations, Mechagodzilla has often represented humanity’s attempts to control nature. Whether built by aliens or humans, this mechanical titan embodies our desire to create a weapon capable of surpassing the power of Godzilla, a force of nature. However, Mechagodzilla’s frequent defeats and occasional susceptibility to possession or malfunction serve as a cautionary tale about the potential consequences of such hubris.

Another recurring theme is the idea of Mechagodzilla being possessed or influenced by another entity. This is evident in the MonsterVerse, where King Ghidorah’s consciousness takes control, and in Kiryu, where the original Godzilla’s spirit influences its actions. This theme explores the potential dangers of artificial intelligence and the unpredictable nature of technology when combined with organic or supernatural forces.

    Conclusion

Mechagodzilla has cemented its place as one of Godzilla’s most iconic and enduring foes. From its extraterrestrial origins to its various human-made incarnations, Mechagodzilla has captivated audiences with its impressive weaponry and relentless pursuit of Godzilla. The Bandai 12-inch action figure is a testament to the character’s enduring popularity, offering fans a chance to own a piece of Godzilla history.

Toho’s “TOHO VISION 2032” strategy highlights the company’s commitment to innovation and global expansion, which could lead to even more exciting appearances for Mechagodzilla in the future. With its focus on animation and new technologies, Toho is well-positioned to continue the legacy of this mechanical menace and bring it to new audiences around the world. The future looks bright for both Mechagodzilla and the Godzilla franchise as a whole.

  • Mattel Extreme Dinosaurs T-Bone Action Figure

Mattel Extreme Dinosaurs T-Bone Action Figure

    A little bit of context

Extreme Dinosaurs: T-Bone the Tyrannosaurus Rex

Remember those radical reptiles from the 90s who were part dinosaur, part superhero? Mattel’s Extreme Dinosaurs toy line and animated series brought prehistoric power to a whole new level. One of the stars of the show was T-Bone, the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Let’s take a deep dive into this awesome action figure and learn everything there is to know about him and the Extreme Dinosaurs franchise.

    Extreme Dinosaurs: The Origins

In the mid-1990s, Mattel was looking to replicate the success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with their own line of action figures. They had already found some success with Street Sharks, a line of human-shark hybrids. To capitalize on the popularity of dinosaurs thanks to Jurassic Park, Mattel decided to create a spin-off of Street Sharks called Extreme Dinosaurs.

The Extreme Dinosaurs first appeared in a few episodes of the Street Sharks animated series as the Dino Vengers. This connection between the two franchises helped establish the Extreme Dinosaurs and introduce them to a wider audience. In their initial appearance, they were aliens from another planet who came to Earth to help the Street Sharks fight Dr. Paradigm. When Mattel decided to create a toy line and animated series based on the Extreme Dinosaurs, they changed the origin story.

In the Extreme Dinosaurs animated series, the dinosaurs were mutated by an interdimensional criminal named Argor Zardok. Argor was a Quadranian, a race of blue-skinned humanoids from another dimension. He was trying to create an army of super-soldiers to take over his home planet. He gave the dinosaurs increased intelligence and anthropomorphic forms. However, the dinosaurs rebelled against him and decided to use their powers for good.

    T-Bone: Leader of the Pack

T-Bone is the leader of the Extreme Dinosaurs. He is a Tyrannosaurus Rex with light yellow skin and black boots, wherein one of his claws protrudes through both boots. He wears dark green pants and shoulder pads. T-Bone is a serious and focused leader who is always attentive to the mission at hand. He is also a skilled tracker and the strongest member of the team. His signature move is the “Saurian Stomp”, which shakes the ground and sends his enemies running.

    T-Bone’s Friends and Foes

T-Bone is joined by three other Extreme Dinosaurs:

    • Spike: A Triceratops who is a martial arts expert and the team’s chef. He is iceberg blue with dark purple under his tail. He wears brown shorts, brown leg bands, and a yellow belt. Spike is always barefoot.
    • Stegz: A Stegosaurus who is the team’s technological specialist. He is apple green and wears purple shorts and black boots. Stegz is the most contemplative member of the team.
    • Bullzeye: A Pteranodon who is a wise-cracking jokester. He is maroon red and wears yellow pants and black boots, which his claws protrude through. Bullzeye’s chief weapon is a shriek of ear-splitting frequency.

Later in the series, the Extreme Dinosaurs are joined by Hard Rock, an Ankylosaurus from an alternate reality. Hard Rock is a pacifist who prefers to avoid violence whenever possible.

The Extreme Dinosaurs’ main enemies are the Raptors, a group of evil Velociraptors led by Bad Rap. The Raptors want to cause global warming to make the Earth more hospitable for reptiles.

    • Bad Rap: The leader of the Raptors. He is orange with a yellow-striped tail and a metal brace-like device attached to his mouth. Bad Rap wears a yellow strap over his torso and waist and black shorts.
    • Haxx: A mahogany Raptor with implants on the backs of each wrist that produce green blades. His tail has been replaced with a blade that is capable of spinning like a drill. Haxx is not very intelligent. He wears pink shorts.
    • Spittor: The brains of the Raptors. He is mulberry-purple with white on his neck, chest, and feet. Spittor wears no clothing and carries a tank of various liquids that he can release from nozzles on his hands, tail, and mouth. These liquids include freezing and acidic substances, which he uses to incapacitate his enemies.

The Mattel Extreme Dinosaurs Toy Line

Mattel released the first series of Extreme Dinosaurs action figures in 1996. The initial series included T-Bone, Spike, Stegz, Bullzeye, and Evil Haxx. The action figures were designed with exaggerated features, such as large heads and jaws, and small, muscular bodies. Each figure had a unique action feature. One of the unique selling points of this toy line was the way it combined the popularity of dinosaurs with the anthropomorphic animal trend that was prevalent in the 1990s, thanks to franchises like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This combination of elements helped the Extreme Dinosaurs stand out from other dinosaur toys on the market.

Later series introduced new paint applications and themes, such as the War Paint theme. The Dino Vision subline introduced new accessories to improve the dinosaurs’ battle abilities. This subline also introduced two new characters: Bad Rap and Hard Rock.

It’s worth noting that the Extreme Dinosaurs toy line had a relatively short production run, spanning just a couple of years. This has made the figures quite rare and collectible, especially those that are complete with their original accessories.

Mattel also released two vehicles for the Extreme Dinosaurs: the Bite Fighter Dino Jet and the Dino Chopper Battle Cycle. These vehicles allowed children to recreate the action of the animated series and engage in imaginative play.

Mattel Extreme Dinosaurs T-Bone Action Figure

The Mattel Extreme Dinosaurs T-Bone action figure was one of the most popular figures in the line. It came with triple-plated body armor, a pivoting power tail, and a dual-firing taser cannon. The figure also included accessories like metal chains and shoulder pads, which could be attached to enhance his appearance and playability. One particularly interesting accessory was the Triceratops Crown piece, which could be placed on T-Bone’s head to give him a more menacing look.

There were several variations of the T-Bone action figure, including:

    • Series 1: The original T-Bone figure.
    • War Paint: T-Bone with a new paint job.
    • Dino Vision: T-Bone with a Dino Vision accessory and a Primal Bazooka.
    • Dino Chopper: T-Bone with a Dino Chopper Battle Cycle.
    • Dino-Damage arm: While this variation pertains to the Skinner figure, it exemplifies the kind of detailed variations that were common in the toy line, potentially including T-Bone. This variation featured a removable arm patch covering claw marks on the arm.

The T-Bone action figure was highly articulated, allowing for a wide range of poses. The jaw could open and close, the head could move side to side and up and down, and the limbs had a good range of motion. This articulation made the figure fun to play with and allowed children to recreate their favorite scenes from the animated series.

    The Extreme Dinosaurs Animated Series

The Extreme Dinosaurs animated series premiered in September 1997. It aired in syndication as part of Bohbot Entertainment’s Bohbot Kids Network block. The show ran for one season and consisted of 52 episodes. The animated series followed the adventures of the Extreme Dinosaurs as they fought to protect the Earth from the Raptors. The show featured a variety of environmental themes, such as global warming and pollution. These themes were relevant to the time and continue to be important today, making the show surprisingly forward-thinking.

Where to Buy T-Bone and Other Extreme Dinosaurs Toys

The Extreme Dinosaurs toy line was discontinued in the late 1990s. However, the action figures and vehicles are still available on the secondary market. Some places where you can buy T-Bone and other Extreme Dinosaurs toys include:

    • eBay: eBay is a great place to find vintage toys, including Extreme Dinosaurs action figures. You can often find complete figures with their original accessories. Auctioned, mint condition Extreme Dinosaurs figures typically sell for around $15.
    • ToySack: ToySack is an online retailer that specializes in vintage toys. They have a good selection of Extreme Dinosaurs figures, including T-Bone.
    • Mr. Joe’s Really Big Toys & Collectibles: Mr. Joe’s is another online retailer that sells vintage toys. They have a limited selection of Extreme Dinosaurs figures, but they do have T-Bone.
    • Toys on the Square: Toys on the Square is a brick-and-mortar store that sells vintage toys. They have a limited selection of Extreme Dinosaurs figures, but they do have T-Bone.
    • Etsy: Etsy is an online marketplace where you can find handmade and vintage items, including Extreme Dinosaurs toys.

The Future of T-Bone and Mattel

There are no current plans for a revival of the Extreme Dinosaurs franchise. However, there is always a possibility that Mattel could bring back the characters in the future. The recent release of the complete Extreme Dinosaurs animated series on Blu-ray could generate renewed interest in the franchise and potentially lead to new toys or even a reboot of the animated series.

In the meantime, Mattel is focusing on its other brands, such as Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Masters of the Universe. The company is also exploring new ways to use technology, such as artificial intelligence, to improve its products and operations. Mattel is committed to sustainability and has set goals to use recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastic materials in its products and packaging by 2030. The company also has a toy takeback program called Mattel Playback, which allows consumers to return their old toys to be recycled and reused.

While the Extreme Dinosaurs may not be on Mattel’s immediate agenda, the company has a history of creating unique and imaginative dinosaur-themed toys. For example, the Bone Age toy line from the late 1980s featured dinosaur skeletons that could be taken apart and reassembled into different forms, including weapons, vehicles, and fortresses. This line was divided into three clans: the Stone Clan, the Ice Clan, and the Lava Clan, each with its own unique dinosaurs and cavemen. This demonstrates Mattel’s ability to innovate within the dinosaur toy space and suggests that they could potentially revisit the Extreme Dinosaurs with a fresh perspective in the future.

    Conclusion

T-Bone and the Extreme Dinosaurs were a product of their time, capturing the imaginations of children in the 1990s with their unique blend of dinosaur action and superhero adventure. The toy line offered a variety of figures with cool action features and accessories, while the animated series entertained with its over-the-top characters and environmental themes. Although the franchise may not be as well-known as some of Mattel’s other properties, it still holds a special place in the hearts of many fans. With the complete animated series now available on Blu-ray and Mattel’s continued focus on innovation and sustainability, there’s always a chance that T-Bone and the Extreme Dinosaurs could make a comeback in the future.

  • NECA Dinosaurs Earl Sinclair Action Figure

NECA Dinosaurs Earl Sinclair Action Figure

    A little bit of context

“Not the Mama!” A Look at Earl Sinclair and His Awesome NECA Action Figure

The Sinclairs were your average family from the prehistoric suburbs, dealing with work, school, and the trials of raising a family. Oh, and they were also dinosaurs! “Dinosaurs,” the early ’90s sitcom from Jim Henson Productions, in association with Walt Disney Television , brought us a unique blend of family-friendly humor and surprisingly sharp social commentary. And at the heart of it all was Earl Sinclair, the lovable, if somewhat dimwitted, Megalosaurus dad. Now, thanks to NECA, fans can bring home a piece of this classic show with the Ultimate Earl Sinclair action figure.

    About NECA

Before we dive into the specifics of the Earl Sinclair figure, let’s take a moment to appreciate the company behind it. NECA (National Entertainment Collectibles Association) has become a leading name in the world of licensed collectibles. They produce a wide range of figures based on popular movies, TV shows, video games, and comic books. NECA is known for its attention to detail, articulation, and overall quality, making their figures highly sought after by collectors.

NECA’s dedication to capturing the nostalgia of classic properties like “Dinosaurs” has a strong appeal to adult collectors. They go the extra mile to ensure their figures accurately represent the characters and creatures we remember from our childhoods, often including a variety of accessories and interchangeable parts to enhance the display and play value.

In addition to action figures, NECA also produces prop replicas, statues, and other collectibles. Their diverse range of licenses includes everything from classic horror icons like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees to beloved franchises like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Universal Monsters, and Gremlins.

    A Working-Class Dino Dad

Earl Sneed Sinclair was the patriarch of the Sinclair family. A 43-year-old Megalosaurus, Earl worked as a Tree Pusher at the WESAYSO Development Corporation (a not-so-subtle jab at corporations and their environmental impact). He was often depicted as stubborn, gullible, and prone to fits of anger (especially when Baby Sinclair wouldn’t stop hitting him with a frying pan). But beneath his gruff exterior, Earl was a loving husband and father who, despite his flaws, always tried to do right by his family.

Earl’s family life was a constant source of both frustration and heartwarming moments. His wife, Fran, was a level-headed Allosaurus who often had to keep Earl in check. His eldest son, Robbie, was a rebellious Hypsilophodon teenager trying to find his place in the world. His daughter, Charlene, was a fashion-conscious Protoceratops with a sharp wit. And then there was Baby Sinclair, the mischievous infant Megalosaurus whose catchphrases (“Not the mama!” and “I’m the baby, gotta love me!”) became iconic.

Dinosaurs: More Than Just a Sitcom

“Dinosaurs” aired on ABC from 1991 to 1994. Created by Michael Jacobs and Bob Young, the show used animatronic dinosaur puppets to explore everyday family life with a prehistoric twist. While the show was primarily a comedy, it also tackled some surprisingly mature themes, including environmentalism, gender equality, and social injustice.

“Dinosaurs” was significant as one of the few sitcoms to utilize animatronic puppets for its main cast. This innovative approach, combined with the show’s witty writing and talented puppeteers, brought the Sinclair family to life in a way that traditional sitcoms couldn’t replicate.

The show’s impact went beyond its entertainment value. “Dinosaurs” is often credited with raising awareness about environmental issues, particularly through its controversial series finale, which depicted the Sinclair family facing extinction due to an ice age brought on by environmental destruction. This powerful ending served as a cautionary tale about the consequences of unchecked industrialization and disregard for the environment, a message that remains relevant today as we grapple with the realities of climate change.

Some of the show’s most memorable characters included:

Groovy! A Look at Earthworm Jim and His Mezco Action Figure

Earthworm Jim! The name alone conjures up images of a wacky, irreverent, and undeniably groovy superhero unlike any other. This iconic character from the 90s, a humble earthworm who stumbled into a superpowered suit, has captured the hearts of gamers and cartoon enthusiasts alike. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the history of Earthworm Jim, exploring his origins, his adventures in video games and television, his friends and foes, and the Mezco action figure that brings this beloved character to life.

From Humble Worm to Groovy Hero: The Origin of Earthworm Jim

Earthworm Jim was once just an ordinary earthworm, leading a simple life of navigating the soil and evading hungry birds in the bustling metropolis of New Junk City. However, destiny had a surprise in store for this unassuming invertebrate. One fateful day, while fleeing from a flock of crows, Jim sought refuge in an abandoned super suit. This wasn’t just any suit; it was an ultra-high-tech-indestructible-super-space-cyber-suit, designed by the brilliant but eccentric Professor Monkey-For-A-Head for the villainous Queen Slug-for-a-Butt.

The suit had been stolen by rebels and lost in the ensuing chaos, eventually plummeting to Earth and landing on Jim. The suit’s advanced technology not only gave Jim the ability to walk, talk, and wield weapons, but it also imbued him with a quirky personality and a unique perspective on the world. It’s worth noting that the creation of Earthworm Jim was spurred by Playmates Toys, the company behind the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures. Seeking to establish their own video game franchise, they took a chance on the quirky earthworm character, a decision that would prove to be a stroke of genius.

Interestingly, Jim’s personality, a blend of flamboyant naiveté and unexpected heroism, draws inspiration from other beloved cartoon characters like Darkwing Duck and The Tick. This blend of slapstick humor and genuine heroism quickly propelled him into the role of an intergalactic savior. He soon found himself battling a variety of outlandish villains, including his arch-nemesis, Psy-Crow, a cunning bounty hunter with a fondness for extravagant headwear. Jim’s adventures led him to explore strange and wondrous planets, encountering eccentric characters and overcoming challenges that demanded both his newfound abilities and his unique brand of off-the-wall humor.

The creator of Earthworm Jim, Doug TenNapel, had a background in animation before venturing into video game design. He honed his skills working on projects like “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: The Animated Series,” which likely influenced the comedic sensibilities of Earthworm Jim.

Wriggling Through the Digital World: Earthworm Jim’s Video Game Escapades

Earthworm Jim’s debut in the digital realm occurred in 1994 with the release of “Earthworm Jim” for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was an immediate success, lauded for its smooth animation, engaging gameplay, and unconventional humor. It’s fascinating to note that the game’s developers drew inspiration from classic animation, with Jim’s idle animations being modeled after Looney Tunes characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

The game’s success can be attributed in part to its innovative use of hand-drawn animations, which were scanned into the game engine, a technique uncommon for games of that era. This resulted in fluid and expressive character movements, setting a new standard for animation quality in video games.

In “Earthworm Jim,” players took control of the titular hero as he traversed through diverse and imaginative levels. Jim could utilize his trusty blaster to dispatch enemies or employ his own worm body as a whip to strike foes and grapple onto hooks, allowing him to swing across gaps.

The original game’s popularity led to a sequel, “Earthworm Jim 2,” in 1995, which maintained the series’ signature quirky gameplay and outlandish humor. Subsequent installments included “Earthworm Jim 3D” (1999) for the Nintendo 64 and PC, and “Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy” (1999) for the Game Boy Color. While these later games may not have reached the same heights of acclaim as the originals, they solidified Earthworm Jim’s position as a memorable figure in gaming history.

The Earthworm Jim games were released on a variety of platforms, including the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Game Gear, Windows, MS-DOS, Master System, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, PC, and Nintendo DSi. This wide availability ensured that Jim’s adventures could be enjoyed by gamers on various consoles.

It’s worth mentioning a special version of the original game, “The Great Earthworm Jim Race,” which was broadcast on the Sega Channel in 1995. This version featured increased difficulty and a secret room that, when reached by the first 200 players, revealed a password and a phone number. Those who called the number were rewarded with exclusive prizes, such as a book and action figures, as part of a short-lived toy line from Playmates Toys.

For those interested in revisiting the classic Super Nintendo version, the game was released as a physical cartridge with product dimensions of 8 x 7 x 8 inches and a weight of 3.2 ounces. It was first released on June 24, 2005, and published by Playmates Interactive.

Television Triumphs: Earthworm Jim’s Animated Adventures

Earthworm Jim’s popularity transcended the gaming world with the debut of “Earthworm Jim,” an animated television series that graced the screens of Kids’ WB from 1995 to 1996. The show, a co-production between Universal Cartoon Studios and Flextech Plc, was produced in the United States and South Korea, with dialogue in English and Portuguese. It was rated TV-Y7, indicating its suitability for children aged seven and above.

The animated series successfully captured the essence of the games, preserving the quirky humor, bizarre characters, and surreal settings that fans had come to adore. Dan Castellaneta, renowned for his portrayal of Homer Simpson, provided the voice for the titular hero, adding another layer of comedic brilliance to the show.

TV Guide describes the show as follows: “Jim was just your average Earthworm until he stumbled upon a supersuit that evolved him. It also gave…source (voiced by Jim Cummings), Professor Monkey-for-a-Head (voiced by Charlie Adler), and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt (voiced by Andrea Martin), as well as his comical escapades with his loyal sidekick, Peter Puppy (voiced by Jeff Bennett).

The show also delved into more mundane situations, such as Jim’s attempts to return a neighbor’s eggbeater or his quest to find a new power source for his suit. Some notable plotlines from the series include:

    • Jim being mistakenly imprisoned while his evil duplicate, Evil Jim, wreaks havoc.
    • Jim and Peter teaming up to prevent Evil the Cat from destroying the universe with a snow globe containing a monstrous but ultimately peaceful creature.
    • Jim thwarting Queen Slug-for-a-Butt’s attempt to sabotage Princess What’s-Her-Name’s coronation ceremony.
    • Jim and Peter joining forces with Bob the Killer Goldfish to stop the Anti-Fish, a cosmic entity that threatens the universe.

A recurring comedic element in the animated series was the “bloating” gag, where characters would inflate to absurd proportions, often with humorous consequences.

The complete “Earthworm Jim” animated series is available on DVD as a 3-disc box set with a runtime of 8 hours and 55 minutes. It was released on July 10, 2012. In the past, episodes of the show were also released on VHS tapes, with each tape typically containing two episodes and an animation featurette.

Friends, Foes, and Freaky Creatures: The Inhabitants of Earthworm Jim’s World

Earthworm Jim’s world is as eccentric and unpredictable as the hero himself, filled with a cast of characters that are both endearing and bizarre. His most loyal companion is Peter Puppy, a seemingly harmless puppy who undergoes a dramatic transformation into a monstrous beast whenever fear strikes him. Princess What’s-Her-Name, a stunning but somewhat scatterbrained princess, is the object of Jim’s affections and often finds herself in need of rescuing. Interestingly, her unusual name originated as a placeholder during the game’s development, a testament to the quirky nature of the Earthworm Jim universe.

Jim’s adversaries are just as memorable as his allies. His rogues’ gallery includes the aforementioned Psy-Crow and Professor Monkey-For-A-Head, as well as Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, a repulsive slug-like queen with ambitions of galactic conquest. Other notable foes include Evil the Cat, a feline antagonist with a fondness for cheese-themed weaponry, and Bob the Killer Goldfish, a seemingly harmless goldfish with a surprising thirst for destruction.

The animated series introduced Evil Jim, a malevolent doppelganger of Earthworm Jim created through a bizarre photocopier accident involving toxic waste. Evil Jim later made appearances in the games, notably as the main antagonist in “Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy.”

Playmates’ Take on Earthworm Jim: The Original Action Figures

Before Mezco Toyz released their Earthworm Jim action figure, Playmates Toys produced a line of figures based on the character in the mid-1990s. These figures were primarily inspired by the animated series, capturing the likeness of Jim and his companions in plastic form.

The Playmates Earthworm Jim action figure line included several variations:

    VariationAccessories
    RegularSnott, Blaster, Bigger Gun
    Battle-DamagedSnott, Battle-Damaged Blaster, Battle-Damaged Bigger Gun
UnderwaterUnderwater Snott, Blaster/Spear-Launcher, Knife, Water-Spraying Gun

The Playmates Earthworm Jim figures also had different paint variations. Some figures came with red accessories, while others had green accessories. Additionally, there were differences between the carded figures and those released on blister cards, with the latter having less paint detail.

Interestingly, a second wave of Playmates Earthworm Jim action figures was planned but never released. This wave would have included figures like Samurai Jim, Extendo-Arm Jim, Copter-Head Jim, Chuck and Fifi, the Hamsternator, Professor Monkey-for-a-Head, Evil Earthworm Jim, and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt. It’s a shame that these figures never saw the light of day, as they would have added even more variety to the toy line.

The Sounds of Earthworm Jim: Music and Sound Design

The Earthworm Jim games and animated series are known for their distinctive sound design, which perfectly complements the quirky visuals and offbeat humor. The music in the games, composed by Tommy Tallarico, is a blend of catchy melodies, quirky sound effects, and unexpected instrumentation. The soundtrack for the first game, in particular, is highly regarded for its originality and its ability to evoke the game’s bizarre atmosphere.

The animated series also features a memorable soundtrack, with its theme song, performed by William Anderson, Jeff Bennett, and Dan Castellaneta, becoming an instant classic. The show’s background music, composed by William Anderson and Patrick Griffin, effectively captures the show’s blend of action, comedy, and surrealism.

Mezco’s Masterpiece: The Earthworm Jim Action Figure

In 2012, Mezco Toyz released a remarkable 6-inch Earthworm Jim action figure that faithfully captured the spirit of this beloved character. The figure boasts eight points of articulation, facilitated by a ball-jointed neck, post/disc ball-jointed shoulders, pin elbows, cut wrists, cut forearms, and a cut waist. This allows for a wide range of dynamic poses, bringing Jim’s action-packed adventures to life on collectors’ shelves.

The figure is meticulously sculpted, with attention to detail evident in every aspect of its design. From the wrinkles and folds on his super suit to the textured “wormy skin” and sculpted irises, the figure is a faithful representation of Earthworm Jim’s iconic appearance.

The figure comes with Jim’s trademark plasma blaster, a game-accurate accessory that perfectly complements his heroic pose. It also includes an alternate “bendy” worm body, allowing collectors to display Jim both in and out of his super suit.

Mezco also released a special San Diego Comic-Con 2012 edition of the figure, featuring a metallic finish on Jim’s super suit. This limited-edition variant has garnered significant attention from collectors, with figures being reviewed by prominent YouTubers and commanding high prices on online marketplaces.

Here are the specifications of the Mezco Earthworm Jim action figure:

    • Height: 6 inches (15.24 cm)
    • Packaging Height: 3 inches (7.62 cm)
    • Packaging Width: 8 inches (20.32 cm)
    • Packaging Length: 11 inches (27.94 cm)
    • Weight: 0.35 lb
    • Country of Origin: China

A notable feature of the Mezco figure is the ability to remove Jim’s head, allowing collectors to recreate the “whip” move from the games, where Jim uses his own head as a weapon. This adds an extra layer of playability and authenticity to the figure.

Where to Buy and What the Future Holds

While the original Mezco Earthworm Jim action figure is no longer in production, it can still be found through various online retailers and marketplaces. eBay is a reliable source for both new and pre-owned figures, with listings often including the standard release, the metallic San Diego Comic-Con variant, and even bundles with other figures from the Mezco line. Entertainment Earth is another online retailer that may have the figure in stock, and it’s always worth checking their website for availability. Additionally, some collectors have reported finding the figure at Target stores, so it might be worth checking your local Target if you’re lucky.

For those interested in exploring the wider world of Earthworm Jim collectibles, eBay offers a treasure trove of vintage action figures from the 1990s Playmates toy line. These figures, while less articulated than the Mezco release, offer a nostalgic glimpse into the early days of Earthworm Jim merchandise.

Looking ahead, the future of Earthworm Jim appears bright. Interplay Entertainment, the company that owns the rights to the character, has been actively involved in reviving the franchise. They have reactivated their website, announced a new animated series, and relaunched Black Isle Studios, a development studio known for its role-playing games. There’s even speculation about potential involvement from Microsoft in these endeavors, which could lead to exciting new possibilities for Earthworm Jim games.

Interplay has also partnered with GOG.com for digital distribution of their games, making it easier for fans to access classic titles like “Earthworm Jim” and “Earthworm Jim 2.” They have also co-published a remaster of “Kingpin: Life of Crime,” demonstrating their continued commitment to the gaming industry.

A new animated series, “Earthworm Jim: Beyond the Groovy,” is currently in development, with writer and director Michel K. Parandi at the helm. While details are still under wraps, the series promises to introduce a new generation to the zany world of Earthworm Jim, with a focus on exploring a galaxy filled with anthropomorphic animals and Jim’s quest to find his true home among the stars.

Additionally, a new Earthworm Jim video game, “Earthworm Jim 4,” was announced in 2019 for the Intellivision Amico console. The game is expected to feature a mix of new content and elements from previous games, with the return of beloved characters like Princess What’s-Her-Name and Peter Puppy.

Beyond Earthworm Jim: Doug TenNapel’s Other Creations

While Earthworm Jim remains his most well-known creation, Doug TenNapel has also contributed to other notable video games. He was involved in the development of “The Neverhood,” a claymation adventure game known for its unique visuals and quirky humor, and “Armikrog,” a spiritual successor to “The Neverhood” that employed a similar stop-motion animation style. These games, while less commercially successful than Earthworm Jim, showcase TenNapel’s distinctive artistic style and his talent for creating imaginative worlds.

Conclusion: The Groovy Legacy of Earthworm Jim

Earthworm Jim has undoubtedly left an enduring legacy in the world of video games and animation. His unique blend of slapstick humor, surreal settings, and surprisingly heartfelt heroism has resonated with audiences for decades. The character’s enduring appeal can be attributed to several factors:

    • Unique Character Design: Jim’s transformation from an ordinary earthworm into a superpowered hero in a quirky suit is inherently appealing and memorable.
    • Offbeat Humor: The games and animated series are filled with bizarre situations, witty dialogue, and unexpected twists that keep audiences entertained.
    • Memorable Villains: Jim’s rogues’ gallery is a collection of some of the most outlandish and entertaining villains in gaming history, from the feather-headed Psy-Crow to the cheese-obsessed Evil the Cat.

Despite facing challenges with later installments in the video game series, Earthworm Jim has maintained a dedicated fan base. The recent revival efforts from Interplay Entertainment, including the new animated series and the upcoming video game, demonstrate the continued potential of the franchise. With new adventures on the horizon, it’s clear that Earthworm Jim’s groovy legacy is far from over. Groovy!

    E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial: A Pop Culture Icon

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the lovable alien from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic film, has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide for over four decades. E.T.’s journey to Earth and his heartwarming friendship with Elliott touched countless lives and solidified E.T.’s place as a pop culture phenomenon. Get ready to discover E.T.’s history, explore the variety of merchandise and collectibles available, and discuss the future of this enduring franchise.

    E.T.’s Origins and History

The creation of E.T. stemmed from Spielberg’s own childhood experiences. Following his parents’ divorce in 1960, Spielberg imagined an alien companion, “a friend who could be the brother never had,” to fill the void in his life. This imaginary friend, who he later named “Zrek,” would later serve as inspiration for the character of E.T., a botanist and explorer from another planet.

In the late 1970s, Spielberg began developing a darker alien film titled “Night Skies,” but during the filming of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” he revisited the idea of a friendly alien. He shared his concept with screenwriter Melissa Mathison, who transformed it into the heartwarming story we know today.

The design of E.T. was brought to life by Italian special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi. Rambaldi drew inspiration from various sources, including his own painting “Women of Delta,” which led him to give E.T. his unique extendable neck. The creature’s face was inspired by the likes of Carl Sandburg, Albert Einstein, and Ernest Hemingway. To achieve E.T.’s expressive eyes, producer Kathleen Kennedy visited the Jules Stein Eye Institute to study real and glass eyes, ultimately hiring Institute staffers to create E.T.’s eyes.

Bringing E.T. to life on screen involved a team of puppeteers and actors. Tamara De Treaux and Pat Bilon, both little people, along with 12-year-old Matthew DeMeritt, who was born without legs, took turns wearing the costume. Caprice Roth, a professional mime, filled prosthetics to play E.T.’s hands.

    E.T. on the Big Screen

“E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” premiered in 1982 and became an instant box office sensation. Initially, Columbia Pictures rejected the script, believing it would only appeal to young children and lacked commercial potential. However, Universal Pictures saw the potential and acquired the script.

The film tells the story of Elliott, a young boy who discovers and befriends E.T., an alien botanist who has been accidentally left behind on Earth. Elliott, along with his siblings Michael and Gertie, help E.T. contact his people and return home while protecting him from government agents. To capture genuine emotions from the child actors, Spielberg filmed “E.T.” in chronological order.

The film’s success can be attributed to its heartwarming story, Spielberg’s masterful direction, and the groundbreaking special effects that brought E.T. to life. “E.T.” grossed $359 million in North America and $619 million worldwide holding the record for the highest-grossing film of all time for eleven years until it was surpassed by Spielberg’s own “Jurassic Park” in 1993. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning four: Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing.

Interestingly, Harrison Ford filmed a cameo as an uptight school principal, but the scene was ultimately deleted.

    E.T. in Video Games

E.T.’s popularity extended to the world of video games, with several titles released over the years. The most well-known, and perhaps infamous, is the 1982 Atari 2600 game. While riding on the coattails of the film’s success, Atari rushed the game’s development, giving designer Howard Scott Warshaw only five weeks to create it. This resulted in a game riddled with glitches and frustrating gameplay, often cited as one of the worst video games ever made and a contributing factor to the video game industry crash of 1983. The game’s notoriety was further cemented when thousands of unsold cartridges were reportedly buried in a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Despite this setback, E.T. has appeared in other video games across various platforms.

Zavvi has a “2 for $34” deal on E.T. t-shirts and offers other merchandise like mugs and cushions. Hot Topic also features E.T. apparel with discounts on select styles.

    E.T. in Popular Culture

E.T.’s impact extends beyond the screen and into the realm of art and popular culture. One notable example is the 1982 painting “Yalta Conference” by Soviet conceptual artists Komar and Melamid, which depicts E.T. in FDR’s outfit alongside Stalin and Hitler. This unexpected portrayal highlights E.T.’s widespread recognition and his ability to transcend cultural boundaries.

    The Future of E.T.

While there have been rumors of a new E.T. movie, including a hoax surrounding a potential sequel titled “E.T.: The Return to Earth,” Spielberg has expressed his desire to leave the original film untouched. He and Mathison even abandoned an early sequel idea titled “E.T. II: Nocturnal Fears.” However, Universal Studios and Amblin Entertainment, who own the rights to the E.T. franchise released a four-minute short film in 2019 called “E.T. A Holiday Reunion,” which shows a grown-up Elliott with his own family reuniting with E.T.

The enduring popularity of E.T. suggests that the franchise will continue to thrive through merchandise, collectibles, and potentially other forms of media. Exploring new video games or interactive experiences could further engage fans and introduce E.T. to new generations. The use of technology, such as AI, could also play a role in developing the franchise, perhaps through creating personalized E.T. experiences or interactive storytelling.

    Conclusion

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial remains a beloved character and a pop culture icon. His story of friendship, adventure, and the wonder of discovery continues to resonate with audiences of all ages. E.T. helped redefine how aliens are portrayed in popular culture, moving away from the monstrous archetype to a more benevolent and friendly figure. This shift reflects a growing desire for connection and understanding beyond our own world.

E.T.’s enduring appeal lies in the universal themes of friendship, empathy, and acceptance, which resonate with audiences across generations. In a world often divided by differences, E.T.’s message of embracing those who are different is more relevant than ever. His story reminds us of the importance of kindness, compassion, and looking beyond outward appearances.

Even the infamous Atari E.T. video game, despite its commercial failure, served as a valuable lesson for the video game industry. It highlighted the importance of prioritizing quality over rushed development and marketing hype, a lesson that continues to resonate in today’s gaming landscape.

E.T.’s legacy extends beyond entertainment. He holds one of the highest rankings for mass appeal and worldwide recognition among all movie characters. His story encourages us to embrace our imagination, cherish our friendships, and remain open to the wonders that lie beyond our own world, reminding us that even in a technology-driven age, the power of human connection and the magic of wonder still hold a special place in our hearts.
